Forms From Motion
Forms is an ongoing collaboration between visuals artists Memo Akten and Quayola, a series of studies on human motion, and its reverberations through space and time. It is inspired by the works of Eadweard Muybridge, Harold Edgerton, Étienne-Jules Marey as well as similarly inspired modernist cubist works such as Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase No.2″. Rather than focusing on observable trajectories, it explores techniques of extrapolation to sculpt abstract forms, visualizing unseen relationships – power, balance, grace and conflict – between the body and its surroundings.

Sacred Economics
Sacred Economics traces the history of money from ancient gift economies to modern capitalism, revealing how the money system has contributed to alienation, competition, and scarcity, destroyed community, and necessitated endless growth. Today, these trends have reached their extreme – but in the wake of their collapse, we may find great opportunity to transition to a more connected, ecological, and sustainable way of being.

Inspiration (#10)
Post like this were previously labeled “Weekly Inspiration” but since it hasn’t been a weekly thing for quite some time, I’ll just label them this way from now on.

Tutorial: The ModelBuilder Library For Processing & 3d Printing
In this tutorial I will introduce you to the world of 3d Printing and Processing using the ModelBuilder library by Marius Watz.
If you are a seasoned Processing user you probably know about installing libraries and using them so I won’t cover that here. If you are a new user, check out the Processing tutorials at Processing.org.
I created this tutorial as a way to learn about the ModelBuilder Library. This summer I spent countless hours building a RepRap Mendel open source printer. Check out the video below to learn more about the RepRap Mendel.
Tutorial
1. Download the following programs
- Processing (1.5.1 used)
- 3d Printer w/ software to print with. I used Pronterface
- Skeinforge (41_reprap_python_beanshell used) to generate gcode
- Meshlab or Pleasant3D to view/modify stl files
2. Explore the example code provided then download the Cube Grid example I made for printing.
3. Run the Processing sketch and press “s” to save out an stl file. If you want to modify the number of cubes in the grid simply change the “n” parameter in the build file and rerun. To alter the space between the cubes change the “bSpace” parameter.
4. Once you have your stl file saved, open it in Pleasant3D or Meshlab. I find it easier to use Pleasant3D for simple manipulations like moving the model relative to the origin and resizing. Here we need to center the object and adjust the center point to something like X: 20.0mm, y: 20.0mm. On my printer this basically moves the start location of the model into the build platform a little bit. When all modifications are done save the stl file.
5. Open the stl file in Skeinforge and build the gcode. I won’t go into detail about Skeinforge due to time and the fact that it’s a monster of a program. There are a lot of settings to work with. If you are new to it start with the manual and google around for some tutorials.
6. Once you build your gcode file you are ready to print. Fire up Pronterface and load the file. Both Skeinforge and Pronterface are python scripts so you need Python installed.
7. Print!

Final result printed. Each cube is 10.0mm x 10.0mm x 10.0mm with a 2.0mm gap in between each.

Abandoned Art
Matt Pearson is doing awesome things for the world of generative art. Sometime in June the hard copy of “Generative Art” will be available. I’m pretty excited for this book as it works through several things I am interested in learning how to do.
